Only half way through this video, but it seems to be the most comprehensive discussion of Chinese Air Pollution that I've found so far. Extremely well explained and reasoned. We as humans have to clean this up. It is not a problem for just people in China.

Ich denke das dieses Video, dass wichtigste Umwelt Video überhaupt ist, es sollte in jeder Schule als ein Pflichtfach gelten, sich mit dieser Thematik auseinander zu setzen.

so everyone can take responsible action in their lives and work to reduce energy use and waste, there would be no smog if people didn't consume the energy, no point blaming someone else, act, lead by example

China and India are fighting a race to the top, if this means killing people as side effects, be it. This kind of mentality is not only present in China, America fight wars all over the world to ensure their hegemony, whoever gets killed it is considered "collateral damage" which in essence is the same criminal act, just in a different manner. Is there something the world can do? Hardly anything, it's been proven that he who loudly shapes history will have the masses on his side. Apply the same in China, today everyone is fixated on making money, this is why many regulations are ignored by greedy officials in the name of progress.

Could someone please inform Chai Jing that if she is serious about this presentation, it all goes down the drain at 1:26,40, when she says "China needs to leave the era of coal and ENTER THE ERA OF OIL AND NATURAL GAS. Only then can we have cleaner air."
The rest of the world is trying to get out of the fossil industry altogether, but the message here is that China should exploit their uncovered oil and gas resources. There´s a name for that: Hypocrisy!
At 1:06 she explains the low profit of steel manufacturing. She mentions the emissions of SO2, soot, NO2 and CO. All nasty stuff -- but what she does not mention is CO2. Carbon Dioxide is the green house gas that is making the planet warming up. The planet has now permanently passed 400 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere, and it keeps rising.
The amount of CO2 per kg of coal is 3,7 kg. One ton of steel produced in China would then emit 600 kg coal x 3,7 kg CO2 = 2 220 kg Carbon Dioxide.
The burning of one ton of coal would lead to the emission of 3 700 kg of CO2. A great deal of that goes into the oceans, killing them. The rest goes up in the atmosphere, killing the rest of us.
At 0:28 we are told that China in 2013 consumed 3,6 billion tonnes of coal. In other words China released 3,6 billion tonnes x 3,7 kg of CO2 = 13,32 billion tonnes of CO2. That´s basically annually! The CO2 takes roughly a hundred years to "disappear". No wonder the planet is dying! No wonder we are in the midst of the sixth mass extinction of species!
China is the worlds largest emitter of greenhouse gases -- one third of the entire world´s. So unless Chai Jing wants to kill everything living on this planet, please tell her to get her facts right. If she is at all interested in protecting her, or any other daughter´s life that is. -
this is the most useless information i've ever seen

This is one of the most important videos i have seen in the last 10 years...
This should be shown in national tv's all over the planet. It has to be shown to kids in schools and it should still be spread on the internet even though it has been released a year ago... -
I am not certain this video is banned in China, the tone of speaker is straightforward, even if that the truth of pollution in China, isn't a secret to rest of the world. What I can tell is, where I live in Taiwan, there is pollution, for example, Taiwan has a lot of aging scooters, their riders don't care about to replace their scooters. There is no enforcement to pollution on those scooters. However, we have to look at this is reality. People who couldn't afford to buy a new scooter, they might have problems of their life, or they are well-off, simply wanna be frugal; we don't know.
China can choose to make corporate to install filters and necessary steps/designs controlling the pollution, there is no question; China surely can afford to limit corporate to operate highly polluted business in their territory, that also has no question.
What it is, there is a balance, to be capitalist, or to any sort of economical progress.
In a sense, everyone in China will be exposed to pollution. It'll be questionable that the government in China would really hesitate to control their pollution, this isn't about democracy or authoritative regime. It is about to live a decent years or to live short and agonizing years. -
When I was younger, while growing up, we smelt odors wafting in from across the river, from a place then called Monsanto Illinois. Just now, Watching the opening of this documentary, as I loaded it to be able to refer it to another person, I found my eyes tearing up. In the USA, today, the EPA keeps a much better lid on pollution, and fewer people smoke. But exposure to toxins may last a lifetime.

An impressive documentary. A great mother. A brave reporter.

The US and its consumerist society, as well as its forceful exportation of ideology, is directly responsible for this and many other atrocities. Global Warming and world pollution are the results of too many TV's and phones and products of all kinds in the American throw-away society. Companies move overseas so our trash can be dumped on the rest of the world.
