How does a rear diffuser work on a car? What is the purpose of a diffuser? In this video I explain the science behind diffusers, and how they increase downforce of racing vehicles. Want more detail? how fast would you have to be going in a street car for a diffuser to start making a difference. I have a 2016 bmw 228i and was considering getting one and wondered if it could have any real benefit other than just looks

Only thing it pulls is money from the wallets of these ricer operators.

Definitely got all this backwards.

How does pressure increase when fluid comes out from an orifice to a larger area? Wouldn't the force be distributed among the large area and hence pressure reduces?

Well explained !!!

also keep in mind the diffuser cannot effect the flow forward of the diffuser.. that would break a very well known law of the law of conservation of momentum.

completely incorrect. the air over the car is high speed and lower pressure.. the wings and tunnels try and counteract the vacuum effect. remember, vacuum doesnt do anythign.... pressure does the work... the "vacuum" you speak of at the rear doesnt change the lower pressure zone under the car. it doesnt "suck" thats a misnomer. you make an analogy to the venturi tube and its NOTHING like it with the car. the rear divergent area doesnt dictate the speed of the air under it. please remove this video... it just confuses folks.
-
air under the car is ambient, except for the venturi tunnels regardless of speed

I wanna let you know that I showed my friend this and afterwards when we went out to eat he tested your example of the styrofoam cup...

Thanks for all of your explainations you make awesome videos

Interesting! I never knew what they did, I only knew they cooled cool hehe. So I suppose this would work on pretty much any vehicle? For example, a Subaru Impreza GT -99. I suppose it has to be low though so I could always lower it and use coilovers.

hmm interesting... i was thinking of the re-amemiya rear carbon diffuser for fc3s, so it creates vacuum under the car, but do i need to make the downforce in the front end bigger also to not get understeer?

Wow thank you for the answer I never knew that's what It did for the car
