Thank you. By stopping those two services and deleting the files worked for me. Then windows update was able to download updates.
it's stuck searching for updates it's taking forever and I tried this but it's still stuck
Everything was great until I got to the Microsoft Update Catalog and it said : "This website does not offer updates for the operating system on this computer." What do I do now???? I did every step until this, now I am stuck here, please answer asap if you can! I have an Asus G73J gaming laptop, windows 7. That website directs me to get my update here but which do I chose??? http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download

DEE Z Thanks so much for posting this. I had bought a Win 8 Winbook tablet and could not get the update to work. I followed your steps but could not delete everything due to Windows Experience Service. I tried stopping that as well but still no delete. But when I restarted everything and rebooted, my Windows Update was back working again with 165 updates needed. Thanks again for taking the time to post this.

It wont stop and gets stuck on trying to stop and results in error
I cannot update or do disk cleanup, because they all get stuck
When I try to update it it just says the update is not applicable for the computer, even though I selected the right one (Windows 7 64-bit)
When i start BITS it says windows could not start it on local computer
