This is why it's easier to maintain stability on a bike while the wheels spin. I remember I had a RC bike made by Tyco that had a gyroscope in the back wheel, and it couldn't loose balance when the bike was travelling. Really fun toy.

it is recommended because spinning by hand will not be fast enough and those high rpm motors will damage the rim

well, technically, you can use your fingers, but it is not fast enough. using the string helps you get it to the speed.
