How a Microwave Oven Works

Bill details how a microwave oven heats food. He describes how the microwave vacuum tube, called a magnetron, generates radio frequencies that cause the water in food to rotate back and forth. He shows the standing wave inside the oven, and notes how you can measure the wavelength with melted cheese. He concludes by describing how a magnetron generates radio waves. You can learn more about the microwave oven from the EngineerGuy team's new book Eight Amazing Engineering Stories http://www.engineerguy.com/elements

A small correction, the depiction of the electromagnetic waves must be out of phase in space; the nodes of electric field coincide with anti nodes of magnetic field.

I'm so glad I found this channel, this is fascinating and enlightening!
-
Does that mean microwave won't heat up dehydrated food
-
so do they change the molecular structure of the food?
-
What happened to the cheese after the video?
-
is there any kind of toxic by touching/inhaling material in the built of a microwave?
I like to disamble one with my 5 year old kid who loves taking stuff apart .. but I somehow remember its not "healthy" ... -
thank YOU

Why thorium is used in the vacuum tube, it is a radioactive element. So it must transform into other elements which wouldn't be ideal as thorium and it must deplete as time progresses.

I feel an odd satisfaction in the fast forward noises you make

Hey bill you are definitely the coolest professor out there! I am a university in Canada, but you really made me want to apply to uofI lol.

While I'm no microwave specialist, I am a self made microwave chef. Tip: Don't ever follow the directions on the back of the box.

λ=2Δx (heated spots)
Good formula -
I determined the exact heat generated by my microwave with a slice of bacon.
-
its amazing i understood what this guys is saying.
-
Nice now I know why part of my food sometimes cold and the other is hot. Thanks engineering guy. :)
-
did he say radiation?
-
Then how come microwave cooked food doesn't taste as good as oven or stove top??
-
I think Bill is Mark Hamills brother :)

wait. microwaves wave lenght is not microscopic? why the hell is it called microwave then?
