How algorithms shape our world | Kevin Slavin
wie Sie tun, machen, Film, Beispiel
http://www.ted.com Kevin Slavin argues that we're living in a world designed for -- and increasingly controlled by -- algorithms. In this riveting talk from TEDGlobal, he shows how these complex computer programs determine: espionage tactics, stock prices, movie scripts, and architecture. And he warns that we are writing code we can't understand, with implications we can't control. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. Closed captions and translated subtitles in a variety of languages are now available on TED.com, at http://www.ted.com/translate.

Do we exist because of math or does math exist because of our innate drive to make sense of the world around us? Do the patterns exist because we look for them?

Listening to this with out watching as I work I can't help but notice that his voice is a bit like Sagan's.

Brilliant, Kevin. Nicely done.

Listening to someone talk with the sound of their saliva popping around drives me absolutely MENTAL. Swallow your saliva.. Keep your mouth dry.

Man's greatest fear! Women don't fear, they worry. . . lol

Man? #human . . . but cool!

love how Kevin literally grounds a well known metaphor!

Algorithms are interesting. Wasn't there a TED talk done about the formations of cities related to algorithms and fractals. This made me remember that. Africa's patterns were developed the most into patterns closest to complex patterns found in nature. Wish I could remember what the video was.

And then comes Michael Lewis and explains why some spend hundreds of millions to blow up rock to save few microseconds in response time. That's how Wall Street is rigged.

Amazing! Oh god why did you not give me a brain like that?

Great insights and very true. Requires greater accountability for those controlling the algorithms.

Too bad math class couldn't be taught like this.

Wow! What a perspective!
