So if the headphones use an opposite wave to cancel out the outside noise, what happens if you play the exact same music on your headphones and also play it on speakers from the same device (this allows it to play at the same exact time). What would you hear? would the interference waves make it so that you hear nothing? Someone help?

Lol My hearing is actually Hypersensitive so noise, sometimes hurts my ears. and I also have ( Hyperacusus ) that makes hearing everyday noise Extremely Loud and very painful for me to hear. And the worst part is I have absolutely No Control over when, where, and How long My extreme Hypersensitivity to hearing Any and all noise that I hear will last... it's awful to have to live with these 2 types of hearing problems. So I Must carry Music to listen to and something else like "Ear Defenders" and/or Something I can put into/over my ears to be able to help me block out the Overwhelming, unbearable daily noise I hear. Did you know that Everything Electronic Let's off a very Hi-pitched Ringing sound it's True. the Ringing sound emulates from thing's that you may not even know are making a Hi pitched ringing sound such as : Indoor and outdoor lights, Pc's / Laptop's, Dvd players, Dish washer's Tv's, Clothes washers and dryers, Tablets Digital clock's, and Yes even Cellphones Emulate the Never ending Hi-pitched Ringing sound i.e. That I hear from having (Hyperacusus)...... interesting isn't it ? I Know, because I can hear it myself. even from my Bedroom lights and TV as I'm typing this Comment. it can be Difficult for me at random time's when every sound Hurts my ears to even hear from my Hypersensitivity to noise.
There are two kinds of noise-cancellation and this does one, exterior sounds; the other is excessive exterior loudness canceled by popular industrial technology that takes sounds above a certain level like around engines, and subtracts the excess, allowing the wearers normal conversation listening and talking despite the engine roar, hammering, blasting....

And that is why children under the age of 14 shouldn't be allowed on planes unless they are drugged asleep.

you forgot to mention that noise cancellation works almost exclusively with low to medium frequency, as high frequency waves just move right around the noise cancelling speaker. Kind of an important point.
If it can't cancel out a dam baby's mouth, then it isn't noise canceling headphones.

I did a science fair project on what was then called "anti-noise" back in 1997.. None of my classmates could comprehend what it was. Granted, I had a hard time explaining it to them.

Hm...since heat is also a wave, couldn't you theoretically cancel it out using an "opposite" wave of heat? I imagine this would likely be very difficult even if it was possible.
