What makes these disparate worlds come alive are clear, consistent rules for how people, societies -- and even the laws of physics -- function in these fictional universes. Author Kate Messner offers a few tricks for you, too, to create a world worth exploring in your own words. Lesson by Kate Messner, animation by Avi Ofer.

am I the only one that makes a fictional world just so in my spare time I can be in a world out of my imagination whilst battling and even just drinking hot chocolate or imagine myself somewhere else when I'm in a argument and just imagining having a friend travel the whole world to get to where I am just to back me up and make me smile , is that weird?

It's just not necessary. We live in a fictional world already. You can look at an atom and tell me what you see there.

When I create a fictional world, I put it together out of things you can do in games (I change them a bit so it's not like I stole it), usually things I dream of (mostly wierd, but cool things), things people do in YouTube series (I also change that a bit), things I wish were true and many, many other things. And when I show to my friends what I created they really like it and want me to crate more. So I already created a few worlds and each time I do, I think more about it and spend more time in it. I usually draw the characters and the landscapes or a map, which really helps!
And this video helped too! :) -
The subtitle is great!

I'm still sad I didn't receive a Hogwarts letter when I turned 11. And not just Hogwarts, I would be happy with any school. Ilvermorny, Beuaxbatons, Durmstrang, I just want to be a wizard. xD

I realized some time ago, that the fictional world I started when i was young and began to write my novel, was way more fascinating and full of fantasy. I kinda rebuild my story and I realized it turned out way more mature, focused on detail, and is way more related to historical archetypes (I study archaeology so historical periods really affect the set of my story), although it is a fictional world. But since then I got the feeling that I lost "it". I mean I really rarely feel the passion I once felt for the story as a whole, although I really love my characters and would´nt give them up so easily. But I just feel that I cant go back to the story the way it where back then.
Maybe my story isnt so "boring" for others as it seems for me, because they dont experience what I experience on a dayly basis(not everyone knows how 9th century houses of northern Europe looked like XD), but still I have the feeling that I am missing something very esscential. -
My fictional world is basically a world with free pizza.

One of the basic human cognitive functions is blending which allows us to construct fictional places. This might be the answer to the question in the video that how are we able to create such worlds. Read the book of Fauconnier, Turner: The Way We Think in case you are interested in conceptual blending theory.

FUCKING TED-ED !!!!! where?? just where is my SPOILER alert ??!!

Video starts at 3:15

The last part is the most difficult one.

try telling that to kids on deviant art with " fantsy and fiction still need rules" they scream at you it dosen't need to make sense. so you can have them have souls-timetravles-wizards-giant robots and everything at once. all with wolfs who use swords and horses that build castles.

Instead of thinking through it out and revising the worlds you want to build. It's better to grab a pen and paper or a notepad on your laptop and start building it up with your main character. It will be so much faster and gives you a head start on whatever fiction you want to write.

This video is really about 1 and a half minutes long.
-
My problem is, I have more than one world and story I want to write, one will be easier, and the other is harder but a better world. I CAN"T DECIDE WHAT TO WRITE FIRST!!!
-
I'm salty I thought the title said 'word' not 'world' fuuccck

The title of this video is misleading because the presenter doesn't explain "how to build a fictional world" -- she describes what some famous authors have done, and asks a series of basic questions that are philosophically interesting. The title had me expecting that there would be some guidance, and possibly the imparting of wisdom from someone who is experienced at fictional world building, but this video disappointingly delivers none of that and so I voted "dislike" for this video (a more accurate title for this video would have focused along the lines of "a vague overview of some minor aspects of fictional worlds that famous authors created").
Everyone dies in the end.
I think I qualify to make game of thrones episodes
