Humans Need Not Apply

So I am posting this in feburary of 2017 and have recently heard some interesting news about automation. There is a factory in china they makes cell phones. They employed 650 people and then they put in robots and now only employee 60. The productivity went up by 250 percent and defects when down by 80 percent. They people doing the automation said in the future they want to get down to just 20 people working there.

So lets put this into perspective. Just from automating one factory alone you lost 590 jobs. And due to the factory becoming more efficient you could shut down another factory and only have another run at half. And not see a dip in production. So 590 plus 650 plus 325 equals 1,565 jobs lost.

So what should we do?

Just some food for thought.

I'm imagining a utopian world right now where most people dont work at all unless they want to and just enjoy life while the machines make and do everything so we don't have to. no one would need a job because it wouldn't cost them anything to do the stuff they want.

A lot of people get scared by this but I'm excited, i want to see where this goes, i want to see if we can make true ai. I want to be friends with an ai.

There is one kind
of job that will not be automated soon. The care of elderly in Nursing Homes. The nursing homes prefer to employ low paid unqualified people to provide low quality of care rather than invest in invention of nursing robots.

We shouldn´t build AIs just as we shouldn´t have built nukes. Just because we can doesn´t mean we should. And it could be stopped by law, cutting fundings or even just criminalizing it. The nuke should have been stopped this way, not stopping AIs would be just as stupid

I agree with a lot of your points, especially your concern that we haven't adequately prepared our society for the potentially large, disruptive changes and technologies on the horizon. I even think I would add an additional concern for the disparity of wealth that's prevalent globally at the moment; in a near-future where a handful of wealthy elite control the majority of the resources and suddenly find themselves not needing about 50% of the worlds population to maintain their way of life I can picture any number of dark scenarios. But I think it might be important to remind ourselves of just how truly awful we humans are at projecting 20, 10, or even 5 years out into the future. Almost every time it has been attempted it fails so badly that it becomes comedy to future generations. Our tendency always seems to be assuming some technologies will arrive way before they actually do, completely missing others, and above all viewing future technology thru the lens of our current fears and experiences.

Take Star Trek, for example, a show that is often hailed as being visionary and inspiring future technology. Kirk had a wireless handheld communications device, something well ahead of its time. But Star Treks communication devices were more akin to a Walkie-Talkie than a cell phone. There was never a suggestion that they performed a variety of functions the way our smart phones do, or even that they were anything other than simple mechanical devices. In fact, Star Trek generally missed the whole personal computer revolution altogether, even though that was only two or three years off when they made the original show. And when characters on the show did use their communicators in conjunction with one another it was often thru an intermediary character in a style reminiscent of a telephone switch board, a laughably outdated concept that was, none the less, more relatable to people of that time than the electronically routed point to point communications we're more familiar with today.

And as for the future of computer technology, the original show envisioned learning computers outstripping our own intelligence and growing into monsters that invariably decided there was no more need for us messy organic life forms anymore (e.g. the second season episode 'The Changeling'). Future technologies that have the potential to replace us are inherently scary, and so we tend to project their influence in end-of-days.terms. You mentioned in your video that (and I'm paraphrasing) "this time it's different" with respect to the impact of coming technologies. But if you've lived long enough, you'll recognize that sentiment. I've heard it several times over the course of my life in reference to emerging technology; I've probably even said it once or twice myself. And yet, each time rather than doom and gloom the world adjusted.

The key is to remember that people aren't static. When their jobs begin getting threatened or replaced by new technology they will begin making their own moves and attempting to position themselves better, with varying degrees of success. And these moves and counter-moves are what will give birth to the technologies and trends of tomorrow that we simply can't see yet.I certainly won't say that a dystopian future is impossible, but I think it's worth noting that we seem to forever overestimate it's likelihood. These are things worth being concerned about, but if I was a gambling man I'm not sure that the smart money is on a future where everyone is unemployable.

Self driving cars aren't better than humans at driving I'm pretty sure I am a better drive than them and I just started learning last week

What if we got robots to completely replace everything so no one had any jobs and all we had to do was anything we wanted. We could just explore the world for free and have all the time we could ever want on our hands

You guys do know that unless robots go full matrix and kill us all then robots will make it so we can live without working.... To some this may seem bad but think about it. As soon as humans were able to produce food for more than just themselves technology increased lives became better. Imagine what we could do if we didn't have to make anything, it was all free. Human minds have one thing that robots don't have which is randomness. Think about it, if the piano bot was random the music would sound like shit, if the artist bot was random it would look like shit. But human minds can be more creative than we think.

All these optimistic comments, dreaming about Marxist utopías where men are free and work won't be necessary for survival.

All these deluded imbeciles not realizing we're facing extinction with the rise of machines, and no, it won't be their doing.

Do you really expect the psychopaths that comprise our ruling elite to keep bothering with us when they no longer need us?
Do you expect that once cheap/slave human labor is not longer needed they're going to tolerate the existence of the greatest threat they face?
