NFL Draft Strategies/Philosophy Explained

So, in the NFL various teams have various strategies coming into the rookie draft. Some teams (more rare) go full blown best player available. Some go based on need, and will reach to get those players, and many teams will use a hybrid of the two. Draft philosophy is never set in stone, per say, because each round requires a different approach, and different drafts require reconsideration. I hope this helped you guys understand a bit about the NFL and the draft practices, so let me know what you think in the comment section below!!!

Somebody please explain how the draft actually works including if teams can trade players and if the player has to go with the team that pick them and why the good players have to go to the shitty teams

Amazing video, I don't think anyone could have said it better

Great vid but in my opinion in every draft there's a bust,a star, and some one who will under preform and someone in the late round who will over perform. Like that Taylor RB I forgot his first name looks good and Odell cousin looks like a super athlete having what have the highest very at the combine and lifted 220 pounds 35 times!!!

Jordan Richards really did not play all that much but he looked decent when playing. Obviously he is not a 2nd round talent, but he has 1st round upside. Do you think he will reach his potential, whatever it is linebacker (probably not linebacker) or safety?

go rams and whn mlb osfm rosters come out
-
The Ravens have the 6th pick.....

I have a question swami
let's say tunsill goes 1. like most people expect and the browns are on the clock would you take best player in Ramsey or goff/wentz well Ramsey would make sense due to you lost o-line in mack and shwartz you lost a weapon in Benjamin so wentz/goff would struggle and you have a hole in ss with Gibson leaving
but how can you justify the browns taking a qb like they probably will -
Are you gonna do a mlb the show 16 franchise?
-
I still don't think the Browns will draft Goff. I think they are going to use Rg3 and maybe draft a back up during or after the 3rd round. That's what I think

IS THAT MACHINIMA SHIRT
-
I like how if a team drafts a quarterback who they are looking to make the future that they go get receivers for them. Like when the Jaguars selected Allen Robinson and I believe Robert woods. That was good because they got bortles his weapons two years ago

Best video on YouTube of all time, my goal is similar to yours, I want to be an NFL Gm. I plan on interning with my college as a freshman next year at Florida Atlantic University and then with the Dolphins my sophomore year. Love your knowledge about fotball. The Bucs have seemed to have been conflicted over draft strategy. Evans was BPA at seven in 2014, and Jameis was a desperate need at #1, and in '13 they screwed up and dealt it for Revis.
Macaggnan (I can guarantee that I spelled that wrong) and Licht are two of the better execs in the league. -
You said reaching on players is bad and you reached on Heath Jackson

You didn't talk about the saints they did good

I'm about to make my mock draft 1.0

My philosophy is similar to yours in that you never want to reach on a player... HOWEVER, I can easily justify a reach if there's still a major hole on your roster and the draft is thin at the position you need. For instance, say you truly need a Left Tackle this year (New York Jets) and your picking at 20. The top 4 T are off the board in Tunsil, Stanley, Conklin, and Decker. I think it's probably easier to find an EDGE guy (another big need) later on in the draft, and I like Mauldin anyways. Given this scenario, I would certainly not fault the Jets for grabbing Jason Spriggs out of Indiana here, who is a fringe 1st/early 2nd round guy. By the time you come up again in round 2, it's likely that Ifedi will be gone, and I wouldn't be shocked if Shon Coleman is gone. This leaves Jerald Hawkins as the best option and you're stuck with no help on the blind side, as Hawkins is really a project. Do I think Spriggs is a top 20 player in the draft? God no, but in this scenario I can not fault them.
The only other time I can justify a reach is if you absolutely need a QB. For instance, Hue Jack and my Browns can not rely on 2 injury prone guys, and would be very smart to take a QB at 2 (or preferably trade down with Jax and grab a guy then). Wentz or Goff? It doesn't really matter, neither is a top 2 player in this draft. But can you fault Cleveland for passing up on far superior talent (whether that be Jack, Ramsey, Bosa, Tunsil, Elliott, etc...) for a chance at a franchise QB? I don't think so.
Ultimately, the best option for a team that doesn't like the talent available and is thinking about reaching is to trade down. I believe this years draft is mediocre at best, and while I have some questions about the talent next year, there's some unquestioned stars (Garrett, Watson, Fournette, Cook, McCaffrey, Chubb, Smith-Schuster, Robinson, etc...). Move down, stockpile picks in future years, and take players worth their pick that also fill a need. For example, say Goff or Wentz falls and is available at pick number 10. I assure you the Giants could generate enough buzz to get the Rams to forfeit future picks and jump up ahead of Chicago. This way, the Giants (a team that is very unpredictable come draft season), can make a safer, better value pick at 15, whether that be Treadwell, Spence, Ragland, Conklin, Decker, etc...
These are just some poorly organized thoughts, so sorry for the essay haha. When I get going words start flowing, especially when it comes to draft time lol.
When he states teams that teams pick needs over talent (i.e. the Redskins pick of Scherff over Leonard Williams), and "reach" for players, it is completely CONJECTURE.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY of knowing whether a team picks talent over need, or vice versa, unless you have privileged information (specifically, how highly that specific team rates that specific player, compared to how high EVERY other team rates that specific player). Even if THAT TEAM admits something along those lines, there is NO WAY to tell for sure, whether they were being honest or not (frankly, never believe what teams say before, during, or after the draft).
So yeah... you can THINK that a team "reached". Whether a team does, depends largely on information NO ONE outside the NFL/INDIVIDUAL TEAMS have. And there is NO WAY they share draft boards, even after the draft is over.
People can take information from "analysts" who talk on ESPN, and armchair analysts on websites or sports radio, but in the end... the reality is, NO ONE KNOWS.
