Beim traditionsreichen Traktorentreffen in Burkhardtsdorf ist seit einiger Zeit immer ein großer russischer Sternmotor aus einer Antonow dabei. Der wurde natürlich auch gefilmt. Da es am Morgen sehr kühl und feucht war, machte er einige Probleme beim starten aber dann lief er. Typisch für alte Sternmotoren ist die große Rauchentwicklung beim Start, da eine größere Ölmenge in die unteren Zylinder läuft, die dann verbrannt wird. Der Sound war wie immer ohrenbetäubend.

It's a shame that this engine just sit on a trailer and just stand there and run a few minutes at an event. Just imagine what this engine can do to a vehicle.

The engine is a gasoline t radial engine. That is what Sternmotor means, stern is german for star.
The engines are air cooled to begin with, they operate at high the height where the temps are lower and , yes at lower ones as well.
Most of the cooling is from the cold air being pushed through the engine compartment by the speed of the aircraft and also from the prop.
Diesel engines do not have spark plugs. They have what appear to be spark plugs but are heat plugs.The heat plug only heats up the cylinder head area during cold weather.
A lot of smoke on radial engines is from oil in the lower cylinders.
Check out a few C-119 videos. I jumped from these at FT. Benning Georgia in 1969. They have radial engines.

It is good to see someone run an engine actually run at full throttle because the other videos on YT, it seem the people are afraid they'll bruise a kidney in doing so. I like this video alot, Cheers bud.
