Stereo vs Surround Sound

http://www.lockergnome.com/media/2011/08/18/is-surround-sound-really-better-than-stereo/ Some time ago, it appeared that everyone putting together a home theater was obsessed with having surround sound. These surround sound systems incorporate five (or more) speakers in an arrangement that allows the viewer to experience sounds from all sides. While these systems can certainly sound good, quality surround systems can be expensive and a hassle to set up, unless you don't mind wires laying across your living room floor. What makes this technology work, and is it really worth the hassle and expense over a quality two or three speaker solution? In this video, LockerGnome's Brandon Wirtz and Chris Pirillo tackle these questions and more as they discuss the differences between stereo and surround sound. http://lockergnome.com http://twitter.com/ChrisPirillo http://facebook.com/ChrisPirillo

Wtf? Doppler effect is about the sounds coming to you having higher pitch. It doesn't have anything to do with any position...
-
so, whats better stereo or surround? is surround worth buying?
-
If you ever heard bass roll over you like a thunder and shake you, or highs that were so sharp they stabbed and pricked at you like a needle, or those warm, rich tones that were as vibrant as any modern abstract art, I seriously doubt you heard from a surround sound system.

Toslink as well as Spd/if (same info, the one's optical and the other electrical) can both send an AC-3 stream, which encodes 6 channels on a SINGLE cable. OMG.. what a video..

No receiver can look-ahead. I mix surround for years and the crap I hear about surround sound is mind boggling.
-
dont get it whats better stereo or surround sound im a gamer so want to know it ;)
-
Pretty sure toslink (optical cable) only supports up to compressed 5.1 audio and uncompressed 2.0 audio. If you want something higher you're going to need an HDMI cable or use analogue cables for each channel.

hmmm True

I agree dude, and I'm much more of a music guy than a star wars surround movie geek.

LOL!

it requires specific software to decode it within the headphones. Most headphones only have the left and right, so you would need headphones that emulate the surround by changing the audio as well as playing it in and out of phase. There are some expensive headphones that actually have multiple little speakers within each ear cup that get positioned at certain points around your ear. Those are usually about 200+ dollars though.

Personally, since going surround, I can't ever go back. I game a lot.

Rubix cubes that light up in the desk? Or on the shelf in the desk? LOL ORIGINAL

So wait, an optical cable can support 7.1 audio? So if yo were watching a movie with 7.1 encoded and you sent to to your headphones via optical cable, you would get 7.1 audio?

So what
listening to Pink Floyd in surround sound.
