http://www.ted.com In a culture where being social and outgoing are prized above all else, it can be difficult, even shameful, to be an introvert. But, as Susan Cain argues in this passionate talk, introverts bring extraordinary talents and abilities to the world, and should be encouraged and celebrated. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world's leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes. Featured speakers have included Al Gore on climate change, Philippe Starck on design, Jill Bolte Taylor on observing her own stroke, Nicholas Negroponte on One Laptop per Child, Jane Goodall on chimpanzees, Bill Gates on malaria and mosquitoes, Pattie Maes on the "Sixth Sense" wearable tech, and "Lost" producer JJ Abrams on the allure of mystery. TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design, and TEDTalks cover these topics as well as science, business, development and the arts. It appears that most people have a very simplified and incorrect view of what introversion/extroversion means. Being an introvert doesn't mean you're not social. I'm an introvert and I have no problem with social interactions and I like parties and stuff, but I'm generally very much in my own thoughts and I prefer being alone most of the time. That is what defines being an introvert, so I'm annoyed when people think that being an introvert means not enjoying the company of others. This is a misconception. Obviously there are a lot of introverts that don't like being around other people, but introverts can be just as socially capable as extroverts.

The sad thing is that people think that introverts are stupid , and we always have to prove them wrong..

"And my beloved husband."
Welp, hopes and dreams smashed. -
Great lecture , this subject is not talked about enough .I have always considred my introvertedness as a disability, aspecially when comparing myself to others, but when listening to this i can aknowledge this as a quality ,and realizing that fear of public speaking is solvable!

This talk encouraged and inspired me a lot. My friends and my relatives always asked why you don't go outside and have some fun. I dont know how to answer I just want to come home with my family doing what I want.

looking at the comments, a good number of people identify as introverts but irl why do people *not understand*. it's like they've never heard of introversion before

Only narcissist love group work mainly to steal ideas!

I really hope that schools take more notice to introvert students. I remember having a ton of group projects throughout my school career and my teachers always fussed when I asked to work alone. They always said "you need to learn teamwork" or "it's too much work for one person". I think by middle school, majority of student know how to work together and how that is so not what group projects teach kids to do. Some students just prefer to be alone, why do we have to shame that?

I feel like everyone laughed at such random times. I wonder if alcohol was available at this event.

I would always get on my report card "Doesn't participate". And it pissed me off because it's hard for me to do that. I didn't not want to participate I just preferred to keep to myself and work alone if I could. There was no balance.

i havent seen the video yet, but let me tell you something i am 13 years old. I am kind of an introvert and i hate that. You know, i like a girl but i cant talk to her or something like that. girls like people that are secure and go to parties. Am nothing like that. i have friends but never go out. i grt extremely sad. i just sit down and think how cool would be an extrovert. How would my life be if i can be with the girl i like. And get stuck in my dreamings. I drean a lot about being with the girl i like. but it will never happen. I hope i am not the only one but i hate being an introvert i just prefer not to live. I just imagine one day wake up and man up to talk to the girl i like go out with my friends but then i realize i am an introvert. I am a swimmer i love it. Thats the thing that makes me happy. i wake up everyday to swim and that is the thing that makes me love life. But then i realize i am not that good and i wont survive of swimming. I just hate my life

" Happiness is our natural state. Happiness is the natural state of little children, to whom the kingdom belongs until they have been polluted and contaminated by the stupidity of society and culture. To acquire happiness you don’t have to do anything, because happiness cannot be acquired. Does anybody know why? Because we have it already. How can you acquire what you already have? Then why don’t you experience it? Because you’ve got to drop something. You’ve got to drop illusions. You don’t have to add anything in order to be happy; you’ve got to drop something. Life is easy, life is delightful. It’s only hard on your illusions, your ambitions, your greed, your cravings. Do you know where these things come from? From having identified with all kinds of labels! " - tony -
I fear in American culture, extroverts will always be more valued than introverts.
