Why does it not work with regular butane?

the switch is way too hard to use. The double index finger and thumb push is just very uncomfortable to use. The old standard gun trigger ones are much easier. These look good but try before you buy. Not recommended :)

I have an older model that doesn't have  a window and won't accept the Zippo butane refill! Any help to hack this?

If you are demonstrating items with your hands, why would you NOT cut your nails? It's very distracting.

Can I use this to light a cigar?  I've heard that butane lighters are the way to go when lighting cigars; not standard lighter fuels.

It's because the light from the flame is washing out the rest of the candle in the camera due to overexposure. The wick is still there. We just can't see it in the recording.

as soon as you lit the candle, the wick just disappeared. can you explain that? is that a side effect of the lighter or is this like some kind of witch craft candle?

I honestly think so. It has the fancier look than a Bic sure, but overall you aren't gaining anything unless you're a Zippo purist.

If it runs on butane fuel and has no wick, why not just use a regular bic lighter with a long snout? Aren't you just paying for the name in this case?
